Restoring
Silverdale
Monument.

In July 2020 the statue of the miner and his cart was removed from the monument, with careful supervision by Drakon Heritage.

Conservators Plowden Smith took the statue to their workshops in South London to restore the statue.

Upon initial inspection it was found that the coal cart was more severely damaged than originally thought resulting in the cart being sympathetically recreated, using as much of the original cart as was viable to do so.

A period of extensive restoration and conservation began which saw the miner and his cart arriving home to be re-installed in December 2020.

In December 2021, the restoration of the statue won the prestigious Marsh Award for Excellence in the Conservation of a Public Statue or Public Fountain.
